Michael Tilby
Michael grew up in Hertfordshire where he attended state school, before obtaining his MChem degree in 2016 from the University of Oxford, Keble College. His final year project was with Prof. Michael Willis and Prof. Rob Paton combining synthesis and computational chemistry in Rhodium catalysis. He then stayed at Keble College and joined the Synthesis for Biology and Medicine Central Doctoral Training programme, providing him the opportunity to engage in multidisciplinary projects, including with Prof. Véronique Gourveneur and Prof. Fernanda Duarte. In 2021 he graduated with his DPhil titled 'Synthesis and Reactivity of Aza-Sulfur Compounds' under the supervision of Prof. Michael Willis. He then moved to the University of Manchester to take up postdoctoral research with Prof. Daniele Leonori. Subsequently in 2022 he moved with the group to RWTH-Aachen University in Germany. During this period he focused on developing new photochemical reactions, studying quantum mechanical tunnelling and applying machine learning algorithms for problems in chemistry. In 2024 he moved back to the UK to start his independent career at the University of Bristol, as the Lecturer in Digital Chemistry for Synthesis.
